Rivers State former Commissioner for Information and Communications, Hon. Emmanuel Ihuoma Okah, said the federal government needs to collaborate with Rivers State government especially in the area of security and fight against crimes in the state.
He said this today in an exclusive interview with OKB News Online, stressing that the federal government should treat all states in the country equally as they are all part of the federal republic of Nigeria.
“We want to see a situation where the federal government collaborates with the state government, especially in the area of security and fighting crimes in our state”, he said.
Speaking on the issue of preferential treatment, the former Commissioner said, “We want a federal government that will treat all states with a considerable measure of equality and fairness, not that you will begin to show preference to some states and treat the others as if they are not a component of the federal republic of Nigeria”.
Delving into the need for evaluation of work and competences of the work producers, Okah said, “We want a federal government that will encourage peer review among state governors. It is something that used to be done under Ex President Olusegun Obasanjo, and we will like to have a situation where that is restored so that governors from time to time can meet, keep politics apart and discuss issues of common interest to them, their states and Nigeria in general. That way, lessons could be learnt and mistakes corrected. Nigerians will be the beneficiary of such collaboration if peer review mechanism is being put in place and supervised by the federal government. It will promote competition and ginger sleeping states to wake up”.
“For us in the Niger Delta, we want a better treatment and respect for our region and people. We want a situation where the federal government will show commendable presence in the Niger Delta. We believe that since we produce the oil that fuels and sustains the national economy, anything that the centre must do anywhere, it should be done first in Rivers State and that of Rivers State should be the best. If it is railway construction, that of Rivers State should be the best. Now we are talking about the seaport, look at what is happening in Lagos; we expect that the federal government should turn to Rivers State and the Niger Delta, use the existing seaport and develop other ones that are not up to international standard. That is very important to us”, Okah said.
