Timetable for the forthcoming National Sports Festival (NSF) which is designed to hold in Benin City, the Edo State capital has been released by the Ministry of Youth and Sports under the auspices of the federal government.
It is against this backdrop that President Muhammadu Buhari, at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Thursday lit up the ‘Torch of Unity’ to flag-off the event across the country.
The timetable for the 20th National Sports Festival titled “EDO 2020”, which is scheduled to run from Friday, March 20 to Friday, April 3, 2020 was made public at the Nelson Mandela Hall, Edo Heritage Hotel in Benin City.
Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, and the Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Mr Sunday Dare, were among dignitaries present at the event.
The ceremony, according to the schedule, will officially hold on March 22, 2020 while it comes to a close on Wednesday, April 1, 2020.
However, governor Obaseki of Edo State is poised to give all the needed and necessary support to ensure a successful national festival.
It would be recalled that the President of the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) Amaju Pinnick in December 2019 okayed Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium of Edo to host the first World Cup Qualifying game in March 2020.
Pinnick said: “This is the home for the Super Eagles. We are coming here in March 2020 to play the first World Cup Qualifying game and it will be historic.
“Confederation of African Football (CAF) will be here in January 2020 for certification of the stadium. I know the stadium is beyond whatever standards they have set. We are happy and commend Obaseki and Edo people for making this happen.”
