2020 Visa Policy: Visa On Arrival Will Achieve African Integration, Says Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has said that the visa on arrival policy will help achieve African integration.

Buhari made the declaration on Tuesday at the State House, Abuja during an official presentation of the Nigeria Visa Policy (NVP) to the public.

Last month; the President announced that people holding African passports can now apply for a visa upon arrival in Nigeria.

It was on that note he said: “We in Nigeria have already taken the strategic decision to bring down barriers that have hindered the free movement of our people within the continent by introducing the issuance of visa at the point of entry into Nigeria to all persons holding passports of African countries with effect from January 2020,”

Also, last month, the Comptroller General, Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Mr Muhammad Babandede said that ECOWAS citizens and countries with visa abolition agreement with Nigeria require no visa for entry into Nigeria.

To non-Nigerians seeking to enter Nigeria, Babandede said:  “They however must enter with valid travel documents and through approved entry point.

“Holders of African Union Passport desiring to enter Nigeria on short visits can obtain visa upon arrival at any of the five International Airports.”

Highlighting the benefits inherent in implementing the Nigeria Visa Policy, President Buhari said it is aimed at attracting innovation, boosting specialised skills and improving knowledge locally.

The 2020 visa policy is to enhance business opportunities and achieve African integration through the visas on arrival for holders of passports of African Union countries.

There are 79 visa classifications in the revised policy, one of which is the Visa on arrival.

The revised policy is a sequel to Buhari’s pronouncements in November 2019 that a new policy of visas on arrival would be granted to all African travellers starting from January 2020.

The new policy favours Africans with a valid passport who wish to come into the country for a short visit, for businesses, and for tourism, as the visa grants them legal stay for up to 90 days.
